Peter Hvidt 1916 – 1986  &

Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen 1907 - 1993


Peter Hvidt was trained as an architect from the School of Applied

Arts in Copenhagen in 1940.

Orla Mølgaard -Nielsen had a background in cabinetmaker and was

also in 1940 trained as an architect from the School of Applied Arts .

In 1944 founded Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard -Nielsen their studio

together under the name of  Hvidt & Mølgaard in Copenhagen and

cooperated until 1975.

The studio existed until 2007 when it was split in two, Hvidt

Architects & Holsøe Architects.

Both Hvidt & Mølgaard had a background in furniture design and the

company's early work was in this area .


In 1947 they designed the AX chair , which was produced by Fritz

Hansen. It was the first chair that was made in


double curved laminated wood and became an icon of their career.

Hvidt & Mølgaard has designed no less than 256 different pieces of

furniture together.

They collaborated with several furniture manufacturers among others

AJ Iversen and Jacob Kjær , Fritz Hansen and Soeborg Furniture .

Besides the many furniture designs , some of their projects in 1970

together with Hans Kristensen, single-family homes,


residential and office buildings and factories, and the new Little Belt
